Fossil hunting in Yorkshire and the North East coast

The Yorkshire coast between Staithes and Filey is Britain's other great fossil coastline. Lower Jurassic shales produce ammonites, belemnites and the jet that made Whitby famous, and the beaches are broad, walkable and rich in loose material.

The geology

Lower and Middle Jurassic mudstones, shales and sandstones dominate the Cleveland Basin coast, with Cretaceous chalk appearing at Speeton and in the Flamborough headland further south.
