What is it?
Pleistocene deposits along parts of the East Anglian coast contain remains of Ice Age mammals. The Cromer Forest-bed of north Norfolk is the best-known British source, and finds of scientific importance should be reported rather than kept.
What does it look like?
Heavy, dark-stained bone and tooth fragments, often rolled by the sea.
How to identify it
- 01Bone shows a spongy internal texture and is heavy for its size.
- 02Teeth show enamel ridges; mammoth molars have distinctive parallel plates.
- 03Significant finds should be reported to the local museum service.
